As per the Kendupatna copper-plate inscription, the king Anantavarman Chodaganga of the Ganga dynasty established the temple in the 12th century BC. It is also mentioned that Anantavarman was originally Shaivite, but he turned into a Vaishnavite after conquering the Utkala region.
The inscription suggests that the temple construction was constructed circa 1112 CE. If you believe the temple chronicles, it was established by Anangabhima-deva II. It also goes on to suggest that the temple took a long time to be made and completed by the Anantavarman’s son Anangabhima tooks therein.
However, there are different versions of the chronicle and they all suggest different years of construction. According to them, the subsequent kings took the development work further. These kings include the ones from the Ganga dynasty and the Suryavamshi dynasty.
